How do Heated Floor Mats Work (and the technology behind them)

From self-operating vacuums to wireless thermostats, technology allows for the automation of many aspects of property ownership. Property maintenance has become hassle-free through technological gains, so why should it be any different when it comes to winter snow removal?

Recent advances in technology have enabled heated floor mats to become more affordable and more efficient than ever before. Here, we break down the basics of heated floor mat technology and why it’s worth utilizing them as your main snow removal method.

The mats are made from special thermoplastics that distribute the heat evenly while maintaining an average temperature of 40 degrees above the ambient temperature. So for example, if the ambient temperature is 0° F (-17.78° C), the mat's temperature will be approximately 40° F (4.44° C). This smart technology allows for mats to melt snow at a rate of up to 2 inches (5 cm) per hour.

While we recommend leaving the mats plugged in for winter, you can also have them wired to turn on automatically. HeatTrak offers a snow sensing controller that will turn the mat on whenever it senses moisture AND the temperature is below 38° F (3.33° C).

(In addition, you can purchase a Wireless Remote Control Outlet & Switch which allows you to turn your mats on and off from inside your home with just the click of a button. Red and green light indicators let you know when the mats are on or off. The 2-outlet design allows two mat systems to be plugged in at the same time. While the controller must be hardwired into the circuit by a certified electrician, it is another way to automate and customize your snow removal process even further.)

Technology has also enabled HeatTrak to ensure that the highest electrical safety standards are upheld. You won’t have to worry about water seeping into the electronics and causing short circuits in the mats. HeatTrak makes sure that mats and extension cords are watertight, durable and made from the highest quality products.

HeatTrak also offers a two-year warranty on all mat purchases in the case of any repairs or replacements. We’ve done our best to make sure that we are bringing you the highest level of technological advances to make your snow removal process easy, safe and efficient. And we promise the value of saving time and money through heated mat technology will be well worth the investment!
